LOCATION
Maleme Maleme is a quiet seaside village, 4 km from the popular tourist village of Platanias with its many bars, restaurants and tourist shops and a good base to explore the exotic blue beaches of Falassarna, Gramvousa, Balos & Elafonissi with their crystal blue waters and pink sand. Maleme has a wonderful new promenade to walk, jog and cycle, dotted with fish taverns with open grounds and playground equipment for the children to play on. In the evenings for a bit of action, the bustling village of Platanias is a five minute drive by car, bus or taxi where there are plenty of clubs, bars, taverns and shops. The hills of Maleme offer quiet walks among the olive, orange groves and vineyards. The area is famous for the heroic battle against the German paratroopers in May 1941. The German Cemetery is up on the hill side facing the plain of Maleme, where 4464 German soldiers died during the battle of Crete and years of occupation. For those who want to enjoy a beach holiday Crete is bathed in sunshine for 300 days of the year and offers the dedicated sun worshipper hidden coves and beautiful sandy beaches. Chania the main town is 15km away with a charming Venetian Harbour, with its Neo Classical, Venetian and Turkish architecture, rich in culture and history. It is a pleasure to wander along the small cobbled paved streets with its museums, churches, souvenir shops and taverns. Local buses run every twenty minutes.
